While AMD Ryzen has reinvigorated AMD and become a fan favourite for gamers looking for a bargain, the GPU division is still lagging behind NVIDIA.
While we have already seen the first release of 7nm Navi 10 based GPUs, most of us are wanting to see what AMD will do with the high-end Navi 20 cards which are due out in 2020.
It is now believed AMD is planning to release a new range of cards based on Navi 14 & Navi 12 GPU.
This rumour started after a recent listing in the Mesa 3D GPU library which has tagged the addition of PCI IDs for two upcoming Navi GPUs, Navi 12 and Navi 14 as ‘trivial and urgent’. The belief is that Mesa 3D want to get support out for the new version which lands on October 15th.
Now a user from 3Dcenter dug inside the latest Linux driver for AMD’s graphics cards and found IDs for both, the Navi 14 & Navi 12 GPU.
From this information, he was able to ascertain that the Navi 12 GPU will have a 256-bit bus, the same as the current Navi 10, but the Navi 14 would offer a smaller interface of 128-bit.
It is claimed that the MD Navi 12 GPU is looking to be placed up against the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER and the GeForce RTX 2080. The GPU could offer 30 to 50% more stream processors than Navi 10 which maxes out at 2560 SPs.
What memory is used is still up for debate, it is likely GDDR6 but there is a possibility of HBM2 for Navi 12.
The Navi 14 cards will be placed below Navi 10, which is confusing, and come in three variants of 3GB, 4GB and 8GB. Other specifications include 1536 stream processors with 24 CUs and clock speeds of up to 1900 MHz.
These variants showed different performance metrics with the 3 GB variant falling on-par with the Radeon RX 570 and the other two outpacing the Polaris cards by a slight margin.
As always, the main thing that is important is how the GPUs are priced against NVIDIA. To date, we have not seen AMD replicate their Ryzen value for money success with the GPUs, and this will likely be critical to drawing away NVIDIA users.
