The original Qi charging was introduced back in 2008 with charge speeds of 5W, and it briefly faced competition from the Power Matter Alliance’s PMA standard and Rezence before establishing itself as the standard form for wireless charging for portable devices.
Over the years, it has been updated to support faster charging, with most QI chargers now going up to 15W by using the Extended Power Profile (EPP).
Back in 2020, Apple developed MagSafe, which is a proprietary charging standard that uses magnets placed around a Qi wireless charging coil, allowing for easy alignments and the possibility to use various accessories.
MagSafe and QI are interoperable, but the charge speed drops to 7.5W when using a MagSafe charger on non-MagSafe devices.
MagSafe is a simple but ingenious modification to wireless charging, and many brands have replicated the functionality on Android phones by making cases with magnets built in.
The Wireless Power Consortium announced the Qi2 standard last year, and this is based on the MagSafe concept, allowing future Android phones to enjoy the benefits of MagSafe.
QI2 is also fully compatible with the iPhone 15/14/13/12. So, much like the shift to USB-C, in the future, you should be able to share QI2 chargers with people regardless of what phone they have.
Qi2 vs Existing Magnetic Battery Packs
Qi2 and MagSafe are essentially the same. The Apple MagSafe Battery Pack can charge Apple devices at 15W, just like QI2. However, not all magnetic battery packs can do 15W, and many are limited to just 7.5W.
With QI2 branded devices, you should always be able to get 15W, whether it is Apple or Android.
Anker MagGo series featuring QI2-certified ultra-fast charging
Anker is one of the first brands to launch a range of QI2 chargers.
The new MagGo product line is built to charge devices quickly, whether you’re on the go, at the office, or home. These Qi2-certified devices offer 15-watt charging in a variety of form factors for every use case. Each product in the lineup employs Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) technology that securely locks iPhones in place for an optimised charging experience.
At the moment, there are no Qi2-equipped Android devices, so I have tested the following MagGo devices with my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and the Ringke Fusion MagSafe Magnetic Case.
All the chargers work as you’d expect. There is not a great deal to write when reviewing these things, but it is worth looking at the price premium of this new technology.

This power bank has launched for £70, and the existing MagGo 622 is listed for £50 but regularly drops to around £40.
The MagGo 622 has a lower capacity of 5000mAh, uses a built-in foldable kickstand and is limited to just 7.5W.
I’d say the new QI2 MagGo power bank is a better design and when comparing the RRP I think it is a decent buy thanks to the increased capacity and faster charging.

The Anker MagGo QI2 Power Bank (10K) has launched for £90. The existing Anker MagGo 633 has an RRP of £70 but regularly drops to around £40, but this is limited to just 7.5W charging.
This model adds an LCD display, which gives you some handy feedback on the capacity and time to charge.
While the price is high compared to the existing discounted Anker MagGo 633, Anker is one of those companies that quickly discounts products shortly after launch, so I would hope the price difference balances out.

This is a handy charger for anyone who is all in with Apple, allowing you to charge your phone, watch and AirPods at the same time.
I use a Garmin watch, so I couldn’t make the most of the watch charger, but I have been using the phone charger plus charging my Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 NC, and it has worked flawlessly.
This seems to either replace the triangular Anker 737 MagGo, which has an RRP of £130 and is listed at £90, or the Anker 3-in-1 Cube, which has a very high RRP of £150.
I feel that the QI2 Anker 3-in-1 charger is a superior design as it folds flat and is more bag-friendly than the cube-shaped model.
The previous generations can do 15W when charging Apple devices, but 7.5W for non-MagSafe devices.
The Anker MagGo 3-in-1 Charging Station has an RRP of £100, which seems expensive but is reasonably priced compared to the older models.

Quick Review
There is not a great deal to say about a wireless charging mat, it does what you’d expect.
The two things worth mentioning are the very long 5f/1.5m cable, which gives you plenty of flexibility in how you use it.
I then find the design a little odd. The bottom of the charger isn’t perfectly flat, so it doesn’t sit on a table as flat as you’d expect. Not that it is an issue when your phone is secured with magnets, and it appears to have the same design as the previous well-reviewed Anker 313 Magnetic Wireless Charger and is not dissimilar to the £45 official Apple MagSafe Charger.
The QI2 MagGo pad has an RRP of £30, which I think is a bit steep for a charging pad, but I’d expect the price to drop soon.
The Anker 313 is listed with an RRP of £16 and is available for just £13. Just like the other older chargers, this is limited to just 7.5W output.
Overall
With the initial launch of QI2 devices, the benefits are somewhat limited as there are no Android phones that can make the most of the magnetic attachment yet.
QI2 should simplify things when deciding on what product to buy. All QI2 devices should support 15W for both Apple and Android, so you don’t need to dive into spec sheets to see if it is 7.5W or 15W.
All the Anker MagGo products I have tested work perfectly well and are a logical upgrade to the previous generation of MagGo products.
The launch price is perhaps a little high, but I’d expect Anker/Amazon to offer discounts shortly after the release.
Personally, I love the MagGo power banks, and I have used the smaller 6.6K extensively during MWC, as it is much more convenient to have my phone magnetically attached to a power bank than using a USB-C cable.
