New FCC docs reveal that a new model is due to launch sometime soon.
The filing for the ‘Nvidia Corporation Shield Android TV Game Console P3430’ appeared in the US governmental body’s online database, which makes a third-gen update highly likely to materialise in the near future. While the FCC listing doesn’t include images, it confirms that at least an updated chipset is present, in the form of the ‘Tegra X1 T210 B01’ processor.
The past two generations use the Tegra X1 A2 chip which uses four ARM Cortex-A57 cores combined with four lower-powered Cortex-A53 cores and Nvidia’s Maxwell microarchitecture GPU, with 3 GB of RAM.
The new Nintendo Switch Lite uses the T214 which is a minor revision of the Tegra X1 built on the 16nm fabrication process. So it is very likely that the new Nvidia Shield will use the same chipset.
The T214 will improve power efficiency thanks to the 16nm process, but CPU specification remains the same, however, the GPU has had a clock boost from 1000 MHz to 1267 MHz.
It is expected that not much else will change with the Nvidia Shield TV, they have no direct competition so why bother? e. It is expected to run Android Pie out of the box and could also feature updated peripherals.
The design could likely change, the 16nm chipset could facilitate a smaller unit.
