The SwitchBot Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer was announced at the start of June and joins the growing number of sensors that SwitchBot have to offer.

This one is particularly appealing as it is IP65 rated and can be used outdoors.

Priced at less than £15, it is an absolute bargain.

  • More Sensitive to Temperature & Humidity: With its built-in industrial Swiss Sensirion sensor, you can expect more accuracy up to ± 1.8% RH, ± 0.2 ° C/0.36 ° F, with a faster and more accurate 4sec data refresh to always monitor the temperature and humidity in your living environment.
  • Smarter Push Notifications (SwitchBot Hub required): Our meter now supports Dewpoint, and VPD readings with absolute humidity as well as classic temperature and humidity readings that can be used as Scene conditions. When used with a SwitchBot Hub, should any preset value be exceeded, our app can push a notification alert to allow you to react in real-time to changes in refrigerators, greenhouses, nurseries, pet houses, and more.
  • Supports Data Exporting: Enjoy up to 68 days worth of data storage locally and up to 2 years using cloud storage (SwitchBot Hub required). Using our updated colour data charts, you can clearly view the temperature and humidity yearly, monthly, daily, or by the hour. Data can be exported as. csv file for more in-depth analysis of your environmental. Supports multiple methods of data calibration.
  • Compact and Durable: Indoor/Outdoor Meter features a simple and compact design, with a lanyard attached to allow you to hang it to just about anything. With its low power consumption design, you can use it for up to two years, and do not need to replace the removable batteries frequently.

Set Up

The basic set-up is similar to other SwitchBot devices. I had to remove the back panel, pull out the battery tab, press the pairing button until it was flashing then pair it up within the app. The app then updated the firmware, which took a little while, but apart from that, it was easy to do, and I encountered no issues.

You can use this sensor by itself and retrieve the data over Bluetooth. You get a couple of months worth of on-device storage, so you only need to check on it once in a while. However, you are best off pairing it with one of the hubs, which will give you up to 2 years of data using the free cloud storage. This will also allow you to set up push notifications.

Homey Integration

I reviewed the Homey Bridge a few months ago and loved it. Many of the new SwitchBot products are not officially listed within Homey, but I have been able to add them to my system.

If you have paired the sensors up to a hub, then you can select Temperature & Humidity (not the BLE one), and this should identify any new devices.

For this Thermo-Hygrometer, Homey will only show the temperature and humidity rather than the additional readings it is capable of.

In Use

There is not really a great deal to say about the functionality side of things. It does exactly what they advertise, and it does it well.

This has more readings than the other temperature and hydrometer sensors that SwitchBot do. You get:

  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Dew Point
  • Absolute Humidity
  • Vapour Pressure Deficit

Generally, the additional readings aren’t particularly useful to me but the more data, the better. Dew point can be a useful one during the colder month as it can help you manage condensation issues.

For example, if the dew point temperature is higher than the actual temperature, I could use a SwitchBot Bot to switch on a dehumidifier or, using Homey, switch on a smart plug to switch on a dehumidifier.

The main thing I like about all of the SwitchBot sensors is the historical data and being able to view it in overtime either as hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or the past year.

Notifications

With it paired up with a hub, you can enable push notifications for any of the variables measured. You can set high and low readings and will receive a notification when this falls out of range. With the reverse toggle, you will then get a notification when it goes within range.

Automation

Under the scenes section, you can set up various smart home automation rules which will then trigger a device.

I currently only have a couple of SwitchBot bulbs that are compatible with this, but using one of the SwitchBot bots to trigger an action would work well here. Alternatively, you can set up a notification via these rules.

Battery and Outdoor Use

This sensor claims to have a two-year battery. I have only been using it a bit over ten days, so at the moment, the sensor is still reporting 100% battery.

One of the sensors is located in my back garden. We have had a few very heavy rain showers, and it has continued to work without a problem. The temperature has been warm, so I can’t comment on how well it will do in the winter, but it shouldn’t be an issue.

The SwitchBot Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer has an RRP of £15 and is available on Amazon from £12.74.

  • PQXMNNBOT for extra 5% off during Prime Day

The SwitchBot Hub 2 is £68, or the SwitchBot Hub Mini is just £35, and these will allow you to get smart notifications.

Switchbot then has the indoor Wi-Fi Thermometer Hygrometer Plus for just £22, or they have the older Bluetooth Thermometer Hygrometer for just £17.

Inkbird appears to be the only brand that does anything close to the Switchbot in terms of price and features. Inkbird has a range of temperature and humidity sensors for different applications, but they don’t have any other smart devices, unlike SwitchBot.

The Inkbird Bluetooth Thermometer Hygrometer is £25. It probably isn’t suitable for outdoor use, though, as it is only IPX4 rated. The Inkbird IBS-M1 Wi-Fi Gateway is £37.

The Govee Wi-Fi Room Thermometer Hygrometer is £28 but seems to lack an IP rating.

The SensorPush HT.w appears to be well-reviewed and provides a good amount of data, but this costs £80, then the G1 gateway is another £115. The main selling point of this brand appears to be superior accuracy compared to others.

Overall

There isn’t really anything negative I can say about the SwitchBot Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-Hygrometer.

It is a smart sensor that costs less than £15 and provides relatively accurate readings for temperature, humidity and more. It is then IP65 rated, allowing you to use it outdoors, and it has an incredible 2 year battery life.

To the best of my knowledge, there is nothing on the market that comes close to this in terms of features and value for money. It is good enough that I am almost certainly going to buy a few more for different rooms around my house.
