While most of the previous PS5 reports have been based on leaks and speculation, we now finally have some confirmed information, which largely confirms some of the rumours.
Sony’s Mark Cerny has revealed that the Sony PlayStation 5 console will offer faster loading times than its predecessor, utilising AMD’s Zen 2 CPU architecture alongside Radeon Navi graphics. The console will also offer
Ray Tracing and utilise a custom AMD chip for enhanced 3D audio.
You won’t have to keep your old PS4 side by side with the new generation as it will offer full backwards compatibility with the older console
The Zen 2 processor will have eight cores and likely have higher clock speeds than the PlayStation 4’s Jaguar-based processor. The PlayStation 4’s Jaguar cores run at 1.6GHz, whereas most desktop Ryzen CPUs run at well over 3GHz. Due to heat, it is unlikely that the console will run at desktop frequencies though.
The GPU will be custom, but it is based on the Radeon Navi family.
Cerny also stated that the platform would support 8K, likely through the use of HDMI 2.1, and that the console will retain support for physical media.
Where the information starts to go a little vague is the storage. Sony claims that their solution will offer more bandwidth than any SSD for PCs today, Cerny said:
The raw read speed is important,“ Cerny says, “but so are the details of the I/O [input-output] mechanisms and the software stack that we put on top of them. I got a PlayStation 4 Pro and then I put in a SSD that cost as much as the PlayStation 4 Pro—it might be one-third faster.
It is unlikely Sony have developed a new storage technology, so it is likely that it will be at least a normal SSD, though with NVMe drives dropping in price almost hitting parity with some SATA drives that could be an option. Then there is the new Optane H10 which combines Intel Optane memory with an SSD onto one chip and has exceptionally high IOs.
While Cerny didn’t confirm a new version of the PSVR, he did state that VR is very important to them and that the current generation will be compatible. I think it is safe to assume a new version will be released at some point.
