MediaTek Dimensity 1080 vs 1050 vs 920 Chipsets Compared – Another confusing addition to the MediaTek line up

I love that over the past few years, MediaTek has become a viable alternative to Qualcomm for mid-range and flagship chipsets. In my opinion, the Dimensity 8100 is one of the best chipsets this year, providing a good balance of price, performance and efficiency.

However, MediaTek loves to churn out new iterations of their chipsets, and it can get a bit confusing.

The MediaTek Dimensity 1080 is one of those. It is a fractional upgrade to the excellent mid-range MediaTek Dimensity 920, not an upgrade to the MediaTek Dimensity 1050.

In short, the new MediaTek Dimensity 1080 bumps up the frequency of the ARM Cortex-A78 cores from 2.5GHz by just 4% to 2.6GHz.

The chipset is then updated to support 200MP cameras, and the chipset can also do 4K HDR video processing.

That’s it. That’s all the changes.

As for the MediaTek Dimensity 1050, that’s built on the same fabrication process and has exactly the same CPU configuration as the Dimensity 920, but it uses a more modern Mali-G610 MC3 GPU.
