With nearly 100 million active Mac users worldwide, Apple’s strength lies with its mobile devices. But, like any device that uses the internet, there are security weaknesses that criminals can exploit. As we become more tech-reliant, we see cybercrime increase almost exponentially.  Even companies, like Apple, struggle to create truly impenetrable layers of security. In a bid to create a more secure online presence, they made the Keychain.

What Is the Mac Keychain?

According to new research, the average person has 100 passwords to remember.  And the best way to manage the plethora of passwords – is a password manager. Developed by Apple for macOS and iOS systems, the Keychain is a password manager designed to store a wide variety of data, including passwords, private keys, and other personal information.

The Keychain can autofill passwords on websites, generate strong passwords, and measure your current passwords’ strength. Because it runs in the background, you may not even notice its presence.

Why Use It?

Besides helping you keep track of all your passwords – and remember them, so you don’t have to, the Keychain has many benefits ensuring your safety online. Keychain can not only store your passwords but can also help to create new ones. If you intend to use your own passwords, it will also tell you if they are strong and help you avoid using weak ones.

Mac OS Keychain also uses end-to-end encryption, which means no one else can read it – not even Apple. Not only does Keychain keep your passwords safe, but it can keep additional notes and details safe in Secure Notes.

How to Make It More Secure?

One of the great things about Keychain is that it provides continuous data breach monitoring. But, Keychain is a frequent target for hackers because of the amount of sensitive information that many users store there, sometimes without even knowing.

Apple products are loved around the globe because they all sync up with one another. But, because the Apple Keychain also auto-syncs, if your account is hacked on one device, the hacker can access your Keychain and find your other passwords.

A simple way to combat these issues and create an extra layer of impenetrable security is by using a VPN for Mac. Whenever you connect to a network, the VPN will mask your IP address, making it harder for hackers to find your Keychain.
