Gigaset have just launched their new SL450 wireless DECT handset with VOIP and SIP capabilities. This phone is an excellent option for small offices, shops and home offices.

The basic specification of the Gigaset is:

  • 1 Analogue connection
  • Up to 6 VOIP lines, including SIP
  • Up to 2 IP calls in parallel
  • DECT/GAP
  • Bluetooth®, Micro-USB, Headset connection 2,5 mm
  • net worldwide telephony, Gigaset GO Apps, Online Services, E-Mail Notification
  • 200 hours’ standby
  • 500 address book entries
  • Address book synchronisation
  • Upto 6 handsets in total
  • 240 x 320 Colour display

Setting up the unit was surprisingly easy you just plug everything in and it pretty much does the rest for you. I was loathing the idea of setting up an IP connection via the phone itself so I scanned network and managed to connect to the web admin for the phone. The admin is more basic though also more user friendly than business class phones such as the SPA line from Cisco. I use Sipgate for my business line and was easily able to set it up using the config wizard.

One it was all set up it worked flawlessly. The base unit was located in my living room down stairs and I was able to use the phone throughout the entire house without interference. Call quality was good but not as good as my wired in line from the SPA525G. When I am sat at my desk I still prefer to use the SPA525G as it is just simpler to use, though it is very large and over the top for a small home office. The SL450 is far more versatile for home use.

Navigating all the features of the phone is OK. This is no iPhone, you have to use the physical buttons to navigate around. I don’t really see the need for all the additional features such as weather etc, but I guess these are just to help it stand out from the crowd, and you don’t have to use them.

One of the features that appealed to me was the ability to import my contacts from Google or Outlook into the phone by exporting then importing a CSV. Unfortunately, I could not get any CSV to successfully import. All my contacts are based in Google and to be honest, they are a mess, so I cannot say for sure how much of an issue this will be for other users.

Lastly, the battery life of the SL450 was fantastic. I don’t make or receive many calls but I think the handset lasted around a week on battery before it died. You should have absolutely no issues using the phone heavily during the day and charging it overnight.

You can buy the Gigaset SL450A GO with its base unit from Amazon for £119.99 and additional handsets cost £99.99. In terms of DECT phones with SIP capabilities there is not a huge amount of competition, there are some lesser specced Gigaset models and that’s about it. If you are not looking for VOIP features, then there are a lot of options, and for less money, so this may not be the best option. However, if you do use VOIP/SIP, and if you make regular landline calls I think you really should be using this as it saves a lot of money, then the Gigaset SL450A GO is a great investment.
