Earlier this week, OnePlus announced the Nord 2 globally, and it is one of the first phones to feature the Mediatek Dimensity 1200, it is also the first phone to use a custom version of that chipset.

The following day Xiaomi / Poco announced the Poco F3 GT in India, and they are expected to launch the Poco X3 GT next week in Malasia. While the X3 GT hasn’t been officially announced, it is expected to be the same as the Redmi Note 10 Pro, which is for the Chinese market.

At the moment, it is unclear and unlikely that new Poco GT models will launch in the UK.

The Poco F3 GT and Nord 2 may appear like competitors at a quick glance, but they are targeting quite different markets. The new Poco phones are geared towards gamers, while OnePlus are focussing on mainstream appeal.

The new X3 GT & F3 GT follows a similar format as the Poco X3 Pro vs Poco F3. The X3 GT uses a slightly slower chipset with an IPS display at a lower price point.

So how do the three phones compare?

Price and Availability

While the OnePlus Nord 2 is available globally, the Poco F3 GT has only been launched in India so far. Comparing UK launch prices to India is pointless.

The OnePlus Nord 2 is available in the UK for £399/£469, available for pre-order on Amazon.

It looks like OnePlus have launched a slightly lower spec 6GB/128GB variant for India, pricing it just below the RRP of the Poco F3 GT.

If the Poco GT models do launch in the UK, I would expect a similar price to the Nord 2, so around £400.

OnePlus Nord 2 is better for photography, making it a better all-round phone

A quick glance at the specs, you might be fooled into thinking the Poco F3 GT is the better all-round phone with a higher refresh rate display, higher MP camera, bigger battery and maglev shoulder triggers for gaming.

However, the OnePlus Nord 2 has a flagship-grade Sony IMX766 50MP camera sensor with optical image stabilisation. It should be significantly better than the Poco phones for photography. For this reason alone, I think the Nord 2 is by far the better overall phone.

Poco GT models are better for gaming

However, mobile gaming is massive, more so outside western markets. If you are more of a gamer than a photographer, then the Poco F3 GT will be significantly better.

I can’t say I notice that much difference moving from 90Hz to 120Hz, but I have found the shoulder triggers on the Nubia Red Magic 6R extremely useful for gaming.

Poco also claims the F3 GT has an aerospace-grade graphene heatsink. I am not sure how much of a difference that will make.  In my Red Magic 6R review, I found that the gaming phone was much less likely to implement thermal throttling, allowing the chipset to run hotter for longer, as the sacrifice of battery. Good for gaming but less appealing for general users.

The Poco X3 GT hasn’t been launched yet, but it will land at a lower price point, making it an appealing, affordable option.

Overall

I think OnePlus are onto a winner with the Nord 2, this year. It would be great if the Poco F3 GT gets launched in the UK, but I am not very hopeful.

Realme should be launching a Nord 2 competitor at some point soon, they have previously promised a Dimensity 1200 based phone with a 108MP camera.

In general, I’d just love to see more Dimensity 1200 or Dimensity 1100 launched in the UK. They seem like a sweet spot for performance/affordability this year while hopefully offer much better battery performance than the Snapdragon 888.
