Tozo Tonal Dots T12 True Wireless Earbuds Review – 2024 model with companion app and EQ

I have previously reviewed the Tozo Golden X1 Earbuds and Tozo OpenBuds and have been impressed with both products.

The Tozo Tonal Dots T12 isn’t a new product; it appears to have been launched or refreshed back in 2022. It received favourable reviews online, with most critics praising the sound quality for such affordable earbuds.

These have been updated again in the past few months, with the new model now supporting the Tozo companion app, which gives you access to an EQ.

I didn’t review the older T12, but I would say that the companion app and EQ make a huge difference in the out of box performance with these earbuds ended up being fantastic value for money.

Design / Fit

The Tozo Tonal Dots T12 have a generic, affordable earbud appearance.

The earbuds themselves sit inside your concha with no stem or another other design quirks. It is a tried and tested design.

Similarly, the case is your generic pill-shaped box, though when you open the lid, you have an LED display showing the case’s battery life, which is a handy feature that you only seem to get on affordable earbuds.

You get five pairs of additional ear tips, which is significantly better than some more expensive options.  I recently reviewed the Marshall Motif II and was a little disappointed with the performance because the three pairs of ear tips didn’t go large enough to create a good fit. When I used larger tips from another set of earbuds, the sound quality significantly improved.

With the largest ear tips, I found the fit very secure, which helps with the sound quality and I was able to do outdoor sprints without feeling they were about to fall out.

It is also worth noting that these are IPX8, and considering the low price point and good fit, these would make an excellent choice for fitness.

App

At first, I assumed these earbuds were not app-compatible due to the low price and was a bit disappointed with the flat sound.

After looking on Amazon, I realised these were the newer version that work with the Tozo app.

The app itself doesn’t do much other than give you an EQ and firmware update options.

However, the EQ is very good and you have a lot of pre-sets which makes finding a sound profile for your tastes much easier.

Sound Quality

When I originally paired these, I was listening to The Distillers, which is quite aggressive punk with a screamy female vocalist. I hadn’t downloaded the app and felt a bit underwhelmed with the sound quality. It was good enough considering the price point but the bass felt a bit recessed and vocalist and cymbals sounded quite harsh.

Switching to less challenging genres, they sounded much better.

After realising these work with the app, I was able to get a much more enjoyable sound from them.

I admit my preference is more bass-forward, and I don’t like my high too bright as I am quite sensitive to high frequencies.

With the bass+ sound profile, you get some elevation from 20 through to 400Hz and I found this worked well with most of the genres I enjoy.

With some genres, I still found the highs a touch harsh, but again, you can tweak this if needed.

Some of the pre-set EQ options did sound a little off. I found that the dance option sounded a little hollow or echoey.

With the sound dialled to my liking, they are not perfect, but I found these just as good as earbuds more than twice the price.

Battery Life

One advantage of these earbuds not having ANC or any fancy audio codecs is the exceptional battery life.

The specs claim a battery life of 15 hours per charge at 50%. I think that’s longer than any other TWS earbud I have ever used. I can’t say I have timed this to confirm, but I have worn them for around 5 hours from full charge, and they still have around 50% battery life.

Another nice bonus is that these can be charged wirelessly. This may be quite normal for earbuds nowadays, but not so much at this price point.

Amazon UK has both the 2022 and 2024 models listed so you will want to be careful which model you select.

At the time of writing, the Tozo T12 2024 are listed at £40 with a 15% off voucher available taking them down to around £34.

The T12 2022 is listed at £37 but with 10% off, taking them down to £33.3.

The Tozo T12 Pro is probably worth considering as it is just £45.

So, in my opinion, it would be pointless to get the older model.

The Creative Zen Air Pro are the cheapest earbuds I have reviewed recently which you can get for around £55 or the Plus model is £45. The Creative Zen Air Pro have a lot more features including ANC, but I think I prefer the sound quality of the Tozo T12.

I have not used them but the Anker Soundcore A1 are a popular pair of affordable earbuds priced at £40 but with 20% off.

Overall

The Tozo Tonal Dots T12 are a good example of keeping things simple. There is no ANC, high-resolution codecs or fancy features in the app.

The only luxuries you have are a good selection of ear tips, app compatibility with EQ and wireless charging.

The end result is earbuds that sound better than most other affordable options and have a fantastic battery life. I think that is what most people really want when they want cheap earbuds.

Even though I have access to much more expensive earbuds, I am leaning towards using these for the upcoming Manchester Marathon purely because they sound good enough, they definitely won’t run out of battery, and it is not the end of the world if I lose them.

Overall, these get a strong recommendation for anyone looking for cheap earbuds that just sound good and last a long time.
