Beyond just jump-starting, it doubles as a versatile power bank for charging laptops, phones, and tablets on the go.

In comparison, the Nebo Ultimate Multi Voltage Power Pack I previously reviewed was limited to a 1500A jump start and is priced significantly higher, though it has many more features, including an air compressor and AC output.

The TOPDON JS3000 portable jump starter packs a punch with 3000 peak amps, enough to jump start even larger vehicles like trucks, RVs, boats, and diesel vehicles up to 7 litres. Fully charged, it provides up to 45 jump starts on its hefty 24000mAh battery, covering everything from family sedans to heavy duty machinery.

Built with professionals in mind, the rugged JS3000 features heavy duty cables and copper clamps rated to IP54 for dust and splash resistance. Beyond engine starting, the JS3000 serves double duty as a 24000mAh portable power bank with 45w USB-C PD input/output for rapid laptop charging. As well as the 45W USB-C port, there is an additional 18W USB-A port.

The JS3000’s Boost function is like a shot of adrenaline for sullen starters. Simply hold the dedicated boost button for 3 seconds, connect the industrial clamps to the battery, and crank away. The jump starter monitors voltage, preventing cranking if improper connections are detected. With power to spare, the JS3000 brings batteries back from the brink in seconds.

Design

Weighing 1.2kg or 2.65 pounds, the JS3000 won’t weigh you down too much. The rugged enclosure feels right at home in pickups, utility vans, and service fleet vehicles.

The jump leads are separate from the unit itself and everything is stored neatly in the included case.

All the expected jump start features come standard – a 12V accessory port to power air compressors, a replaceable 25A fuse, and a polarity indicator to avoid reverse connections. The basic LED indicators show the remaining charge percentage.

Thoughtful design touches include a carrying handle that stows flush and a built-in stand to angle the 400-lumen work light. The is also a retractable hook allowing you to hang it up.

Adding to the rugged factor, all the ports are protected with rubber flaps.

How to use the jump starter

Jumping a dead battery with the JS3000 takes just a few simple steps:

1. Turn off the vehicle ignition and any accessories
2. Connect the positive (red) clamp to the positive battery terminal, and the negative (black) clamp to a metal ground point away from the battery
3. Hold the Boost button for 3 seconds until the jumper cables flash
4. Crank the ignition – with 3000A on tap, even diesel engines spring to life in seconds
5. Once started, unplug the clamps and let the vehicle run for a few minutes to recharge its battery

With an IP54 rating and rugged construction, there’s no worry about a little rain or dirt during hookup. The JS3000 delivers power even in the messiest situations.

The Topdon JS3000 packs quite a punch for a compact jump starter. Its 3000 peak amps provide enough power to jump-start most passenger vehicles over a dozen times on a single charge. With the large 24000mAh lithium-ion battery, Topdon claims up to 45 jump start cycles when fully charged.

While peak current ratings can sometimes be misleading, testing shows the JS3000 can maintain 400 amps for 4-5 seconds and 200+ amps for nearly 10 seconds – ample power for spinning over sluggish starters. Voltage remains steady during these high current surges, demonstrating excellent power delivery from the internal battery pack.

The JS3000 works well in cold weather, too. Starting current decreases only slightly at temperatures down to -4°F, outperforming many competitors that struggle in freezing temps. Between the extreme cranking power and operation in sub-zero conditions, this jump box is ready to tackle situations that leave other models sputtering.

Flashlight

An integrated 400 lumen LED flashlight includes multiple modes: full strength, 50% brightness, SOS signalling, and flashing strobe. The adjustable stand allows tilting the flashlight horizontally or vertically.

While there is no replacement for a dedicated flashlight, the convenient built-in illumination proves handy for roadside repairs or camping trips. 30 hours of runtime spans several nights of weekend camping.

To turn the light on you need to press the power button to switch the device on, then hold down the power for 3 seconds. Subsequent presses switch between the flight modes,

Power Bank and USB 45W Power Delivery  

The device also doubles as a 24000mAh power bank. It features a single USB-C port capable of 45W power delivery and then an additional USB-A port rated at up to 18W.

The USB-C port is bidirectional, so you can use it to charge the Topdon. While it has a DC port, this is not used to charge the jump starter; instead, it can provide 10A-16.8V output or 168W, which could be used for things like air compressors. I didn’t have an appropriately sized DC cable device to test this output.

One gripe is that the included USB plug and cable are only USB-A and limited to 18W output, which means this jump starter charges very slowly. There are plenty of affordable 45W or higher power delivery USB-C plugs on the market.

The GOOLOO GP3000 is a well-reviewed, affordable alternative, rated for 3000A peak current. It also has a flashlight and USB output, but the USB is limited to 15W USB-C input/output and then 18W USB-A output. This also has a 15V/10A DC output.

For more power jump starters, NOCO appears to be a popular choice. They have the Boost X GBX155 4250A priced at around £380 or the Boost Pro GB150 3000A priced at around £310.

Overall

The Topdon JS3000 jump starter is an excellent jump starter that should be capable of jumping some of the most demanding vehicles on the road today.

With 3000A peak current, a 60W USB-C port, QC 3.0 USB charging, and a 400-lumen flashlight, it goes beyond just boosting dead batteries and is a useful gadget to keep in your vehicle.
