Huawei is following their usual schedule of launching their flagship system on chip at IFA in Berlin this year.

There have been various rumours about a Kirin 985 and/or 990 chipsets, and Huawei has now revealed it will be the Kirin 990 that will be launching, as well as launching a teaser video.

So far we know that the Kirin 990 will be produced on TSMC’s 7nm EUV process which will provide 20% greater transistor density and in turn increased power efficiency.

Not confirmed, but it is expected that the new silicone will allow for 4K video recording at 60fps – a first in the Kirin series, and an area they have lagged behind for a while now. We can expect an enhanced NPU based on Huawei’s Da Vinci architecture and ARM’s latest CPU and GPU components.

In terms of 5G, it is not known how they will do it. At the moment it is presumed there will be the main processor and its 5G-compatible variant. What is known is that it will support all mainstream 5G formats, that 30GHz to 300GHz millimetre and sub-6 have not been clarified.

Furthermore, Yanmin Wang,  one of the higher-ups at Huawei, confirmed to TechRadar the companies new chipset will be featured in the much delayed Huawei Mate X. I guess with all the Samsung delays Huawei took the opportunity to upgrade the Mate X as much as possible, so when it launches it can beat the Samsung Fold in as many ways as possible.

The launch of the Mate X was expected in September (after being delayed), but not is looks like it might be November. The Mate 30 series normally launches in October so I would imagine Huawei will want to separate the two releases to maximise publicity, and launching the Mate X after their mainstream flagship phone seems to make sense.
