I have written about a few portable power stations now, but these have typically been in the 600Wh range and are geared more towards travelling and camping.

Various brands have large capacity options which are geared towards whole home backup for emergency use but these brands cap out between 2160Wh and 3600Wh capacity.

However, Bluetti have recently launched the Bluetti EP500 Pro for the UK market, and this is by far the largest capacity power station on the market, with 5100Wh, that’s more than double what Jackery has and over 40% larger than the highest capacity EcoFlow.

During the day, assuming I don’t have the electric oven on, the peak draw of my home is around 1kw. Therefore, the Bluetti EP500 Pro should be able to keep my house going for a good 5 hours during a power cut.

LiFePO4 Batteries

With such a large capacity and a high price tag, you may be concerned about the longevity of the battery. However, this uses LiFePO4 (Lithium iron phosphate), which is a newer form of lithium-ion battery compared to the Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) batteries you will find on competing brands. These LiFePO4 are being widely adopted by the electric car industry, and all the standard range Tesla Model 3 and Y cars now use them.

These batteries have a lower energy density compared to NMC, but they have a significantly longer lifespan. Bluetti claims this has a 6000+ charge cycle where it will have a 50% capacity after this period. In comparison, NMC batteries typically drop down to 80% capacity after around 500-800 cycles.

Of course, the lower energy density does mean this power station is very large. The net weight is 83kg (182lbs) and has dimensions of 500*300*760mm (22.8*11.8*29.9in). In comparison, smaller 3600Wh capacity options from other brands weigh about half this. It shouldn’t be an issue unless you plan on carrying it up and down your stairs frequently.

AC Rated Power Output

The Bluetti has a rated AC output of 3000W which should be more than enough for most homes, unless you plan to run a kettle and electric oven at the same time as powering the rest of your home.

It can have a 6000W peak load, but only for half a second, and it can handle up to 4500W for around 5 seconds.

For charging, it has a maximum input of 3000W Max via AC or 2400W via the PV input (for solar).

Output Ports

All that power is no use if you don’t have many plug sockets to use.

You have 2x 220-240V three-pin UK plug sockets which can do 3000W.

On the top of the Bluetti EP500 Pro you have:

24/7 UPS and other features

Bluetti advertises this as being able to function as a 24/7 UPS, when using it in online mode, there is no switching time for the UPS, and in standby mode, there is a 20ms delay.

It is also app-controlled and has a smart display which provides all the information you need on the current power draw or input.

Solar Charging

Bluetti also has a range of solar panels that you can use to provide some charge to this.

The 200W PV200 is £500, and they have the 350W SP350 for £749.

Alternatively, it is possible to use your roof solar panels with up to 1200W MPPT solar input to rapidly recharge or to keep your appliances running without depleting the onboard battery.
