Yesterday, Apple held their annual launch event where they revealed the iPhone 14 series and the new Apple Watch Series 8, including the new Ultra model.

If you spent a lot of money on an iPhone last year, there is a good chance you spent a decent amount on a good-quality case to protect it. A quick glance at Casetify, and they want between £50 and £70 for a case, which is not an insignificant cost.

If you are looking to upgrade, you will quite reasonably wonder if you can keep your existing case.

At the moment, there is no definite answer, it is unlikely any case will work from the previous generations, but each model has changed sizes a little differently, and I have covered it in more detail below.

Looking at the height and width, the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro Max have stayed the same or reduced in size. Which would mean you can use the case, but with a bit of wiggle room. The problem is that the depth has increased by 0.1mm or 0.2mm. Looking at the iPhone 12 series, this seems to be a trend with Apple, and it makes you wonder if it is deliberate to make sure that cases become obsolete each generation. That’s potentially a lot of unnecessary plastic waste.

Is my iPhone 13 case compatible with the iPhone 14?

There is only 1mm difference with the iPhone 14, and everything else is the same. That’s not a lot, but cases should fit perfectly with no wiggle room, so it is likely that the case may not fit properly. But, you may be able to squeeze your phone in there, especially if the case material has stretched a little after a year’s worth of use.

[EDIT] Quite a few brands on Amazon are marketing the iPhone 14 cases as being compatible with iPhone 13. So it looks like your old case may work after all.

Dimensions:

  • iPhone 14: 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8 mm
  • iPhone 13: 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.7 mm
  • iPhone 12: 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.4 mm

Is my iPhone 13 Pro case compatible with the iPhone 14 Pro?

With the iPhone 14 Pro, you have no chance. This is listed as being 0.8mm taller and 0.2mm thicker; this is significant when things are manufactured for a perfect fit.

Dimensions:

  • iPhone 14 Pro: 147.5 x 71.5 x 7.9 mm
  • iPhone 13 Pro : 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.7 mm
  • iPhone 12 Pro: 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.4 mm

Is my iPhone 13 Pro Max case compatible with the iPhone 14 Pro Max?

The Pro Max is 5mm narrower but 2mm thicker. Even if you could squeeze the phone in, it is going to have a lot of wiggle room side to side, which will probably get quite annoying.

Dimensions:

  • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 160.7 x 77.6 x 7.9 mm
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max: 160.8 x 78.1 x 7.7 mm
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max: 160.8 x 78.1 x 7.4 mm

Apple iPhone 14 Plus might fit in an Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max

There is no reason why you would upgrade from an Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max to a Apple iPhone 14 Plus, but if there is some scenario where you are wondering if the iPhone 13 Pro Max case might fit the iPhone 14 Plus, then it won’t.

I mistakenly thought it might, there is just 0.1mm difference in depth. However, the camera spec is different which means the camera bump is a different shape.
