Design

The Tronsmart T7 looks like a lot of portable outdoor speakers with its cylindrical shape and tough black plastic body. It feels very durable, and I am sure it can handle a few drops on the floor.

On the top of the speaker sits the volume dial and this is encircled by RGB lights. The RGB lights are controlled via a single click on the power button. They have quite a large impact on the battery life, so I would just switch them off.

Down one side are the rubberised controls as well as a string loop for carrying it around. It weighs just under a kilo, so it is sensibly sized for days away carrying it around.

The USB-C port and microSD slot is also hidden under a rubber tab allowing this to achieve a waterproof rating of IPX7.

Sound Quality

This sounds pretty good, considering the price and size. Like all speakers, you get the best performance at moderate volume, but it is something that is particularly important to remember with these smallish Bluetooth speakers. I wouldn’t recommend cranking this all the way up as the sound quality deteriorates, but it is still good enough to listen to.

This is perhaps a little mid-forward which makes sense as the size of the speaker isn’t really geared up to be bass-heavy. Highs are slightly rolled off, and it avoids that sharpness or tinniness that many small speakers are prone to.

This has the capacity to produce quite good bass. The woofer is ported out of the bottom rather than using a passive radiator like its bigger brother, the Tronsmart Bang Mini. With the downward-firing bass, you can get a bit more acoustic rumble than you might expect from such a small speaker.

When switching to listening to hip hop and electronica, this would provide a good thump on the lower end.

Unlike the Bang Mini, I was able to get this to work with the Tronsmart App. This then allows you to customise the sound using various EQ modes or manually control the EQ with the custom mode. This works reasonably well, and you can tweak the sound to your liking, but you are still limited to the overall abilities of a cheap 30W speaker.

This only has the SBC codec; there is no AAC like you see on most devices nowadays. I wouldn’t have expected aptX/LDAC at this price point.

You can also pair two of these up for stereo audio, but I only have a single speaker, so I didn’t test it.

Battery

With the RGB on, this is rated for around 4 hours with the RGB on or 12 hours if with them off and with the volume at 30%.

With the RGB on, that’s quite a poor battery life, and I would strongly recommend switching them off.

Price and Alternative Options

The Tronsmart T7 is currently listed on Amazon UK for £50, and there is a 30% off voucher at the time of writing, taking it down to around £34

At this price point, there is not really anything I can recommend over the Tronsmart T7. Tronsmart have the T6 Plus, which is a bit louder, for around £50 after the 15% voucher is applied

Overall

Considering the price, the Tronsmart T7 is a superb speaker. At moderate volumes, it sounds good and is loud enough for personal use or in a small group without playing music offensively loud.

It is well built, durable, and the carry string allows this to be handy for things like camping.
