Like many people, I don’t floss my teeth anywhere near as much as I should and I always tell the dentist I do it more than I actually do. She always tells me off and the cycle continues.

I used to have a Philips Sonicare AirFloss which I bought back in 2013 and it was the best alternative I had used at the time. I just pressed the button once and it gave off a high power squirt of water. The problem with older electric dental gadgets is the dreadful propriety chargers which I inevitably lose.

After being impressed with the Oclean range of electric toothbrushes I decided to give their W10 “oral irrigator” a try. The RRP of the Oclean W10 Water Flosser is £59.99 but they regularly have discounts.

I originally liked the Philips Sonicare AirFloss because it gave one strong squire of air and water and that was it.

I have tried other cheap water flossers before with messy results. The one I used only had one option and sent out constant squirts of water, which meant water went everywhere and all over my bathroom mirror.

The Oclean W10 has multiple options and some of these do send out constant jets of water which left me with water all over the bathroom and down myself. However, it also has one option with three dots which squirts out three successive bursts of water and then stops.

It took some time to master, the first couple of goes I had my mouth open exposing my teeth and the squirts of water inevitably splashed back onto the mirror. With some adjustments, I managed to master using it without getting water everywhere.

The results seem to be good, there is some noticeable debris that comes out.

If you choose the constant stream of water, the technique seems to be bending over the sink and quickly working your way around your teeth letting the water fall out of your mouth. This just feels a bit awkward to me, perhaps I just need more time to master it.

The flosser comes with 4 different nozzles. You have two with a hard plastic end then two with a brush end, one a fine brush and another a thicker. I prefer the nozzle with a thinner brush end as I feel like this gets in between my teeth better with the squirts of water than doing the extra work.

I haven’t been back to the dentist since I started using the flosser but my teeth do genuinely feel cleaner. It is also perfect for when you have annoying bits of food stuck in between your teeth.

There is also the more expensive Oclean W1 which works a bit more like the Sonicare AirFloss I previously like. This uses water and air mixing to achieve effective cleaning between teeth. It has three modes, two being manual and one automatic. The water tank is much smaller but it also uses much less water.

Overall

Once I had mastered using the Oclean W10 without getting water everywhere I loved it. It is much less unpleasant than using dental floss and I find it quicker to do.
