I have reviewed quite a few clip-on earbuds now, including the Soundcore Aeroclip, the Soundcore C40i and the SoundPeats Pearl Clip. It is a segment that has boomed in popularity in recent years. While I don’t wear them regularly myself, this design is by far my partner’s preferred option. She finds them much more comfortable than standard earbuds, and there is the added benefit of environmental awareness, which is particularly important to women, a sad reflection of the world we live in.

The SoundPeats POP Clip2 have launched recently, priced at £59.99.

The product name is a bit confusing; the press material calls it UU2, as does the Amazon listing, but the packaging is clearly labelled as POP Clip2. I will therefore call these the POP Clip2 going forward.

Design

The POP Clip2 (officially named the UU2, though the packaging in most markets still reads POP Clip2) arrives in fairly standard clip-on packaging: a compact box with a photograph of the earbuds on the front and Hi-Res Audio Wireless and LDAC badges printed in the corner. Inside, the case sits under a thin protective sleeve, with a cardboard insert holding the instructions, a sticker sheet and the USB-C charging cable tucked into a small compartment underneath.

The case itself is a rounded, pebble-shaped design finished in matte black. It feels solid in the hand, with a hinge that opens and closes with a reassuring, positive action and no wobble. The charging port and reset button are on the back edge of the case.

Open the lid and you will find two identical-looking earbuds, each made up of a larger housing that sits behind the ear and holds the battery and a single physical button, connected by a flexible bridge to the smaller driver housing that sits just outside the ear canal. SoundPeats calls this the U-Bridge, and it uses a 0.5 mm nickel-titanium memory wire designed to flex to different ear shapes without losing its grip over time.

A genuinely useful touch is that both earbuds are electronically identical, so it does not matter which one goes in which slot in the case. Close the lid for a few seconds and the earphones automatically work out which side is left and which is right. It is a small detail, but it removes the fumbling that comes with grabbing the wrong earbud in a hurry.

Build materials are ABS and polycarbonate, finished with what SoundPeats calls a nano-excimer skin-feel UV coating, intended to give a smooth, matte, fingerprint-resistant surface. Each earbud weighs around 5 g, and the case with both buds inside comes to 47.7 g. Compared with the rest of the SoundPeats clip-on range, the POP Clip2 sits below the flagship Clip1, which uses touch controls and a larger, roughly 55.5 g case, and above the original POP Clip, which used a smaller 10.8 mm driver. The physical buttons on the POP Clip2, rather than touch panels, are a sensible choice for this style of earbud, since they reduce the risk of accidental taps when adjusting the fit while out and about.

Comfort / Fit

Comfort is the whole point of a clip-on earbud, and this is a segment where fit varies enormously from one person to the next. At around 5 g per earbud, the POP Clip2 are light enough to disappear during use, and the flexible memory wire in the U-Bridge does a good job of spreading the clamping force so nothing feels like it is pinching the ear.

Where opinion is more divided is the surface finish. The skin-friendly coating gives the earbuds a slightly grippy texture rather than a smooth, slick one. That is good news for security, since the earbuds are unlikely to slip once positioned, but it also means you notice them sitting on your ear a little more than you might with a smoother finish, such as the one used on the Soundcore Aeroclip. It is not uncomfortable, just more perceptible, and sliding the earbuds into position is not quite as effortless as it could be.

As with every clip-on design, how well the POP Clip2 works for you depends on the shape of your ear and exactly where the driver housing ends up sitting relative to your ear canal. Get the angle right and the sound opens up considerably, with noticeably more bass than when the earbud sits even a few millimetres out of position. This is not a criticism unique to SoundPeats, it is simply the nature of the category, and it is worth trying a pair in person, or buying from a retailer with an easy returns policy, before committing.

The slim profile of the driver housing also means the POP Clip2 sit comfortably alongside glasses, which is not always the case with bulkier clip-on designs. For long stretches at a desk or on a walk, most people should be able to wear these for hours without discomfort.

SoundPeats App

The POP Clip2 pairs with the SoundPeats app, available for both Android and iOS. SoundPeats is explicit that this is the correct app to use with the POP Clip2, rather than the older PeatsAudio app that some reviewers have used in the past. Having two apps in circulation from the same company is a source of confusion for new buyers, and it is worth double-checking you have installed the current SoundPeats app rather than an older alternative before pairing.

Setting up the earbuds does require registering an account with an email address. No other personal information is collected during sign-up, but it is an extra step that other brands in this price range do not always insist on, and it remains a mild annoyance if you just want to update the firmware and move on.

Once connected, a firmware update is likely to be offered immediately, and it is worth installing before you judge the sound. At least one early reviewer found that turning on DynamicEQ, the algorithm that boosts low-frequency output, resulted in audible clipping and distortion before a firmware update resolved the issue. After updating, the same reviewer found DynamicEQ made a considerable difference, adding weight and depth to the sound without the artificial edge. Keeping the firmware current is the best way to hear the POP Clip2 at their best.

Inside the app, you get a reasonable spread of EQ presets alongside a custom equaliser with individual band and Q-factor adjustment, plus the option to run a hearing test and generate an adaptive EQ profile tailored to your ears. There is also a community section where other users can share their own EQ profiles, which is a nice touch if you would rather borrow a tuning than build one from scratch.

Spatial audio is included, with separate Music and Movie modes, though this is one area where the POP Clip2 could use more polish. It works acceptably for podcasts and video in Movie mode, but in Music mode it tends to thin out the sound and add brightness that is not always flattering. LDAC also has to be switched off if you want to use spatial audio or connect two devices at once through multipoint, so you are trading a small amount of audio fidelity for those features.

Privacy Mode is a feature aimed at reducing sound leakage in quiet spaces such as an office or library, by rolling off some of the high frequencies that are most likely to escape and be heard by people nearby. It works as described, though it is worth knowing that switching it on resets any custom EQ settings back to default, so you will need to reapply your preferred sound profile afterwards.

Beyond that, the app covers the basics you would expect: toggling game mode for lower latency, adjusting voice prompt volume and language, and remapping the physical button controls. SoundPeats also appears responsive when support is needed. One reviewer who ran into a faulty unit after testing DynamicEQ was sent a replacement pair without a fuss, which is reassuring given how new this product still is.

Sound Quality

At the centre of the earbud sits a new 12 mm titanium-coated dual-magnet dynamic driver, paired with SoundPeats’ DynamicEQ processing to boost low-end output in real time. SoundPeats quotes a maximum output up to 6.8 dB SPL louder than the Clip1 and 3.2 dB SPL louder than the original POP Clip, and in practice these earbuds go considerably louder than most clip-on designs without breaking up.

Bass is the headline improvement here. Open-ear clip-on earbuds have traditionally struggled to deliver convincing low end, since nothing seals against the ear canal to reinforce it, but the POP Clip2 manage a surprising amount of punch and depth when positioned correctly. It is not going to match a sealed in-ear monitor for outright sub-bass extension, but for the category it stands out, and it noticeably outperforms earbuds like the Soundcore Aeroclip in this respect.

Mids are clear and well balanced, with guitars and vocals sounding a touch more natural and less muddy than on rival clip-on earbuds such as the EarFun Clip 1, which several reviewers noted has slightly more bass overall but with less clarity and texture. Treble is smooth rather than sharp, avoiding the sibilance that can creep into cheaper open-ear designs, while still resolving reasonable detail. Soundstage and separation are both better than expected at this price, giving the POP Clip2 a sense of space that makes for an enjoyable, non-fatiguing listen over longer sessions.

As with every clip-on earbud, none of this holds if the fit is wrong. Positioning still makes or breaks the experience, and if the driver housing is not sitting close to your ear canal, the sound will come across as thin regardless of how good the underlying hardware is.

Microphone / Call Quality

Each earbud carries two microphones, backed by AI-powered call noise reduction and a proprietary system that SoundPeats says cuts wind noise by around 25%. In practice, call quality indoors and in still conditions is good. Voices come through clearly on both ends, and testers reported no complaints from the people they called while wearing them.

Wind is the weak point, as it is for almost every earbud of this type. Testing with an air purifier blowing directly onto the microphones showed intelligibility holding up reasonably well at low fan speed, but breaking down noticeably as airflow increased, particularly when it was aimed straight at the microphone opening. The wind reduction system helps rather than eliminates the problem, so calls outdoors on a blustery day are likely to suffer, while calls made indoors, in a car, or on a calm day should be perfectly usable.

For everyday calls at a desk or during a commute, the microphone performance here is solid for the price, even if it will not match a dedicated headset in challenging conditions.

Battery Life

SoundPeats quotes up to 10 hours of playback per charge from the earbuds themselves, and up to 42 hours in total once you factor in the charging case, tested with the SBC codec at 60% volume with DynamicEQ and spatial audio switched off. A 10-minute top-up in the case is enough for around two hours of playback, a useful amount of quick charge if you are heading out the door. A full charge takes around 1 hour 30 minutes for the earbuds and around 2 hours for the case, both over USB-C.

It is worth noting that those headline figures are measured under fairly conservative conditions. Switch on LDAC for higher-resolution playback, which most people buying these for the sound quality will want to do, and real-world battery life drops. One long-term reviewer reported closer to 6 hours per charge with LDAC enabled, still respectable but well short of the quoted 10 hours.

There is no wireless charging on offer here, which is not unusual at this price but is worth flagging if that is a feature you rely on with other earbuds. Overall, battery life is competitive for the category, and the case comfortably covers a working week of typical use between top-ups.

Overall

The SoundPeats POP Clip2 is a good example of how far open-ear clip-on earbuds have come. The bass is genuinely surprising for the format, the app offers a level of EQ customisation that goes well beyond what most budget earbuds provide, and the redesigned U-Bridge and automatic left and right recognition are practical touches that make daily use easier.

There are a few rough edges. Running two apps under the SoundPeats name is confusing, requiring an account to unlock the full feature set is an unnecessary hurdle, and spatial audio in Music mode needs more work. None of these are dealbreakers, but they are worth knowing about before you buy.

As with every clip-on earbud, how well the POP Clip2 works for you will depend on your ears. If the fit is right, you get an enjoyable, punchy and detailed sound in a design that lets you stay aware of your surroundings, which is exactly what my partner, and plenty of other clip-on converts, look for in this style of earbud. At £59.99, and considerably less with the launch discount code, the POP Clip2 is a strong option in a crowded market, and one of the better-sounding clip-on earbuds tested at this price.
