Acer Connect M6E 5G Mobile WiFi Router Review

It has been a while since I reviewed a mobile router, but I have done a few in the past, including the premium-priced Nighthawk M6 Pro and the bargain Vodafone / ZTE MU5001 5G Mobile Hotspot Review.

Acer is not really known for its networking products, but the company has been in the market for a few years now, and the Acer Connect M6E 5G Mobile WiFi Router is its most recent launch.

The M6E was first shown at CES 2025, where it picked up Laptop Mag’s Best Router of CES award, and it has since collected a Red Dot Design Award for its design. It launched in the US at $249, and it has taken a while to arrive here, but it is now officially available in the UK with an RRP of £199.99.

On paper, it has a lot going for it. There is a rugged design rated to IP68 and MIL-STD-810H, a large 8,000mAh battery with a claimed 28 hours of use, tri-band WiFi 6E, and three different ways to get online using a physical Nano SIM, eSIM, or the SIMO virtual SIM service. That combination is unusual at this price, so I have been keen to see how it holds up in day-to-day use.

Features

The M6E is built around the MediaTek Dimensity 7300, a smartphone-class chip with an integrated 5G modem. It supports 3GPP Release 16, 3x carrier aggregation with up to 140MHz of bandwidth, and a theoretical peak of 3.27Gbps down and 1.75Gbps up. In practical terms, that puts it roughly in the same class as the Qualcomm Snapdragon X62 and X65 modems found in many competing hotspots. There is no mmWave support, but that is largely irrelevant in the UK, where all the networks run sub-6GHz 5G.

Band coverage is broad. You get 17 sub-6 5G bands and 26 LTE bands, which covers everything the UK networks use, including n28 and B20 for low-band coverage in rural areas, plus n78 where the bulk of UK 5G capacity sits. It should also travel well, with the main US and Asian bands covered.

On the WiFi side, this is a tri-band WiFi 6E device, broadcasting on 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz with 2×2 MIMO and support for up to 20 connected devices. The 6GHz band is the headline feature here. Very few mobile routers offer it, and it is genuinely useful in congested environments like hotels and conference venues, where the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands can be saturated. The obvious caveat is that your client device also needs WiFi 6E or WiFi 7 to take advantage of it.

There is a 2.4-inch colour touchscreen on the front, which is used for checking data usage, viewing the WiFi password, switching bands, and basic settings. It is far more convenient than the button-and-tiny-display arrangement on cheaper hotspots. You also get NFC touch-to-connect, so Android users can tap their phone against the device to join the network without typing a password.

A less obvious feature is what Acer calls Wi-Fi Extending, which allows the M6E to connect to an existing WiFi network and share that connection with your devices, similar to a travel router. This is handy for hotel WiFi, where you can connect all your devices through the M6E and only authenticate once, though running the radios for both upstream and downstream duty will inevitably come with a performance and battery cost.

Security covers WPA3 encryption, a built-in firewall, SIM lock, and VPN support, and the device receives firmware updates over the air directly from Acer rather than being gated behind a carrier.

Design and Build Quality

The design is one of the strongest parts of this device. The M6E measures 139.7 x 86.4 x 18.8mm and weighs under 300g, so it is roughly the footprint of a phone but around twice the thickness. The white casing has a ridged, suitcase-style groove pattern across the front and rear, with grey rubberised bumpers protecting each corner. There is also a fabric lanyard loop at the top, which is a small thing, but useful for clipping the device to a bag when travelling.

The corner bumpers and casing contribute to the MIL-STD-810H shock rating, while the whole unit carries an IP68 rating, meaning it is dustproof and can survive submersion in up to 1.5m of water for 30 minutes. I would not deliberately test that, but it does mean rain, spills, and dusty environments are not a concern. Considering how these devices tend to live at the bottom of a bag, that peace of mind is worth having.

Physical controls are minimal. The power button and Nano SIM tray sit on one side, with a recessed reset pinhole. The USB-C port is on the bottom edge alongside a small microphone hole, which relates to an optional microphone accessory Acer sells for AI transcription features. USB-C handles both charging and tethering.

The 2.4-inch touchscreen is bright enough to read indoors and responsive enough for the simple menus it needs to handle. The home screen shows your carrier, signal strength, battery, cumulative data usage, and how many clients are connected on each WiFi band.

No Ethernet Port

By far, the biggest issue I have with this mobile router is the lack of a built-in Ethernet port.

With the Nighthawk M6 Pro, when I am not using it for travelling, I will often use it as a backup connection on my Unifi Cloud Gateway Max. Having 5G backup for my home Internet helps justify the cost of devices like this.

Even when travelling, if I am working from a hotel room, I would much prefer to connect my laptop via Ethernet for a better connection.

However, this does support USB tethering, which is effectively the same, and when travelling, you could argue this is superior to Ethernet as the router can take a charge while also providing wired connectivity.

It is worth noting that some routers can use a USB WAN connection, so depending on your hardware, you may still be able to press the M6E into service as a failover connection at home. It is just not as universal as Ethernet, and it rules out a clean pairing with most consumer routers and gateways.

Set Up

Set up is about as simple as these devices get. The Nano SIM tray pops out with the supplied tool, and once the SIM is in and the device is powered on, it connects to the network automatically. For most UK SIMs, the APN is detected without any manual configuration, though you can set it manually through the web interface if your provider needs it.

Connecting your devices can be done three ways. You can read the WiFi password off the touchscreen, scan a QR code from the display, or tap an Android phone against the NFC point on the front of the device. The NFC option works well and is the sort of small quality-of-life feature I wish more hotspots had, particularly when you are handing out access to several people.

For anything beyond the basics, the web interface is available at http://acer-connect.com or http://192.168.76.1, with the default password printed on the device label. From here you can manage SIM profiles, change WiFi settings, set data limits with usage alerts, configure the firewall, and toggle the Wi-Fi Extending mode. It is a fairly clean interface, and while it does not offer the depth of settings you would find on something like a GL.iNet travel router, it covers everything most people will need.

SIMO and eSIM Support

The standout feature of the M6E is its flexibility with connectivity. Alongside the physical Nano SIM slot, it supports eSIM profiles and SIMO vSIM, a cloud-based virtual SIM service. Acer’s SignalScan feature works with SIMO to automatically identify and connect to the strongest available network, with coverage claimed across more than 135 countries.

In practice, this means you have options. At home, a cheap PAYG data SIM is almost always the best value. Abroad, you can either buy a local eSIM through providers like Airalo or Holafly, or purchase data directly through the SIMO service and skip SIM hunting entirely. SIMO data is the convenient route rather than the cheap route, and for heavy usage a local SIM or eSIM will normally work out cheaper, but having the fallback built into the device is genuinely useful for short trips or arrival-day connectivity.

There are a couple of caveats worth knowing about. Only one SIM type can be active at a time, and switching between them is a manual process, so there is no automatic failover if your primary SIM loses coverage. Adding an eSIM profile is also slightly convoluted, as it is done through an Acer web portal and requires the M6E to already be online, either via another SIM or by connecting it to a WiFi network using the Wi-Fi Extending feature. It is not difficult, but it is worth sorting your eSIM before you travel rather than at the airport.

Mobile Performance

Mobile router performance is always heavily dependent on your network, location, and signal conditions, so treat these figures as indicative rather than definitive. As a basic test to establish baseline performance, I ran speed tests with three SIMs in my phone:

  • Three: 234Mbps download / 6Mbps upload
  • Vodafone: 60Mbps download / 17Mbps upload
  • EE: 27Mbps download / 6Mbps upload

As you can see, Three has by far the best download performance in my area, while Vodafone has the edge on upload. EE is comparatively weak where I tested.

Acer Connect M6E WiFi Performance

Connecting over WiFi to the M6E with the same SIMs produced the following results:

  • Three: 204Mbps download / 27Mbps upload
  • Vodafone (5GHz WiFi): 127Mbps download / 30Mbps upload
  • EE: 55Mbps download / 3Mbps upload

The results broadly track the SIM rather than the router, which is what you want to see. Three came in slightly below the phone baseline on download but with a much better upload, while Vodafone and EE both comfortably beat my phone’s results. Differences like this come down to antenna performance, positioning, and the natural variance of cellular testing, but the takeaway is that the M6E does not meaningfully bottleneck a typical UK 5G connection.

Acer Connect M6E Tethering Performance

USB tethering to my laptop produced the best results overall:

  • Three: 256Mbps download / 20.5Mbps upload
  • Vodafone: 127Mbps download / 38Mbps upload
  • EE: 55Mbps download / 3Mbps upload

Tethering edged ahead of WiFi on Three and matched or beat it elsewhere, which is expected as you remove the WiFi link from the equation. If you are working from a fixed spot, tethering is the way to go, with the added benefit that the device charges while connected.

For context, none of these results get anywhere near the theoretical 3.27Gbps maximum, but no real-world UK connection will. Multi-hundred-megabit results are typical of what UK networks actually deliver, and the M6E performed at least as well as my phone in every scenario, often better on upload.

Battery Life

The 8,000mAh battery is one of the largest fitted to any mobile router. For comparison, the Nighthawk M6 Pro uses a 5,040mAh battery, and most budget hotspots sit in the 4,000 to 4,500mAh range. Acer claims up to 28 hours of use, and while claims like this are always based on light, optimistic usage patterns, the underlying capacity means this comfortably gets through a full working day and then some. In my time with it, battery anxiety simply has not been a factor, which is more than I can say for some hotspots I have used.

Charging is via USB-C with fast charging support, and because tethering works over the same port, you can keep it topped up while using it as a wired modem. One thing Acer does not specify is whether the battery is user-replaceable or whether the device will run directly from USB power without a battery, which matters if you intend to leave it permanently plugged in as a backup connection. Lithium batteries do not enjoy being held at 100% charge indefinitely, so this remains a device best suited to portable use rather than a permanent installation.

Price and Alternative Options

At the time of writing, the Acer Connect M6E 5G was available on Amazon for £205, Scan for £210, and Ballicom for £200, all in line with the £199.99 RRP.

The old Acer Connect M4 5G is available for £170. It drops to WiFi 6, has a smaller battery, and lacks the rugged design, but it is a reasonable saving if you just want basic 5G sharing.

The Netgear Nighthawk M6 Pro has been superseded by the Nighthawk M7 Pro, which is available for an eye-watering £900. However, there is the M7 at £530 or the M3 at £400. The cheaper models lack Ethernet, but Netgear sells an Ethernet dongle for £30.

The GL.iNet Mudi 7 is one of the most appealing devices on the market. It is tri-band WiFi 7, with 2.5Gbps Ethernet and 700Mbps VPN performance with built-in support for services like Surfshark, NordVPN and others. It then costs £370.

The GlocalMe Numen Air Portable WiFi Hotspot 5G is available for £300 and is a little different as it lacks physical SIM support. It instead uses eSIM only through GlocalMe, though this potentially means higher data costs.

The ZTE U60 5G is one of the cheapest options at £200 while still supporting WiFi 7 (dual band). It is the closest direct competitor on price, and the WiFi 7 support gives it a small edge on paper, though it lacks the rugged build, the larger battery, and the tri-SIM flexibility of the Acer.

Overall

The Acer Connect M6E is a good 5G mobile router. While £200 is not cheap, it is cheaper than most competing models while having the advantage of multiple connection options with SIMO, eSIM, and Nano SIM.

The rugged design is also beneficial, as I rarely look after these devices. They get thrown into my bag and forgotten about until I need them, and the IP68 and MIL-STD-810H ratings mean that is not a problem here. The 8,000mAh battery follows the same theme. This is a device designed to be dependable rather than flashy, and it succeeds at that.

Performance is good. Devices like the Nighthawk M6 Pro could probably achieve more, and almost certainly would when paired with external antennas, but it is hard to justify that massive price difference. Even the GL.iNet Mudi 7 is over 50% more, and while it is a superior product in several areas, I would not say the improved specs justify that additional cost for most people.

The compromises are worth being clear about. There is no Ethernet port, no external antenna connectors, no automatic failover between SIM types, and the eSIM enrolment process is more awkward than it should be. If any of those are deal-breakers for your use case, the alternatives above are where I would look.

For the travelling professional or anyone who wants dependable mobile connectivity without spending Netgear money, the M6E hits a sensible middle ground. It is well built, flexible with SIMs in a way almost nothing else at this price is, and it performs as well as UK networks allow. RRP is fair for what you get, and that is not something I say about many mobile routers.

Summary

The Acer Connect M6E delivers a strong balance of performance, durability and flexibility. It may not match premium hotspots for expandability, but its rugged design, excellent battery life, tri-band Wi-Fi 6E and support for Nano SIM, eSIM and SIMO make it one of the most compelling options at around £200. The lack of Ethernet and external antenna support will deter some power users, but for most travellers and mobile professionals, it offers excellent value.
