Startech 199UE-USBC-DOCK Review – Driverless DisplayPort MST USB-C Docking Station Supporting Triple 4K Displays

I have been impressed with the last couple of docks from Startech. Back in December, I reviewed the Startech 140W Universal Triple Monitor Docking Station, which has DisplayLink, allowing you to use three external monitors even if the CPU on your laptop does not.

Then the Startech Thunderbolt 5 Universal Docking Station is one of the most affordable Thunderbolt 5 docks on the market.

I have continued to use both of these myself. The TB5 dock is in my home office, and the DisplayLink dock is at work.

Startech does not do easy-to-quotable product names, and the new dock I am reviewing today has the product ID of 199UE-USBC-DOCK. This is a more affordable docking station that supports 4K displays and features DisplayPort MST.

What is DisplayPort MST?

Multi-Stream Transport (MST) allows multiple displays to be connected to a single DisplayPort output on a desktop PC or laptop. It does this by combining multiple video signals into a single stream through a process known as multiplexing, then sending that stream over a DisplayPort cable to a device that unbundles the signal.

The unbundling part can be done on an MST-capable monitor or, in this case, a hub. It is worth noting that while Startech has put some emphasis on this being an MST hub, this is actually how most USB-C docks handle multi-monitor output. The alternative approaches are DisplayLink or Thunderbolt native outputs, both of which work differently.

DisplayLink uses compression and a dedicated chip to render video, which means it works even on laptops that do not natively support multiple external displays. MST, by contrast, relies on the host laptop’s GPU to drive all connected screens, which means the laptop itself must support the required number of external displays. That is an important distinction, and one that catches people out.

It is also worth understanding the bandwidth implications. DisplayPort 1.4 – which is what most USB 3.2 Gen 2 docks like this one use – supports up to 32.4 Gbps of total bandwidth. Running three 4K displays at 60Hz each would require far more bandwidth than that, which is why this dock can only deliver two at 60Hz with the third limited to 30Hz. If you need all three at 60Hz, you would need a Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 dock, or a DisplayLink solution.

The chipset list is worth a closer look. Startech has used a combination of chips to handle the various functions: the VL822 manages the USB hub, the RTL8153E handles Gigabit Ethernet, and the VMM5320 is the MST hub controller responsible for splitting the video signal across multiple outputs. This is a reasonably well-regarded combination of silicon, and the use of separate dedicated chips for each function – rather than an all-in-one solution – tends to result in more reliable performance.

The overall design is very Startech; it is very utilitarian. The dock is a flat, rectangular slab measuring 190 x 79 x 27 mm and weighing just 0.3 kg, so it sits neatly on a desk without taking up much space. There are no RGB accents, no glossy surfaces, and no styling flourishes. If you are buying this for a home office and want something that looks the part, you will likely be underwhelmed. If you are deploying it in a corporate environment, that understated appearance is exactly what you want.

The only noteworthy design detail is the USB-C cable, which is screw-locked to the dock to prevent it from being knocked loose. This is a practical feature that is more common on enterprise-grade products than consumer docks, and it is a sensible inclusion here given the target market.

On the front you have two 5Gbps USB-A ports and two 10Gbps USB-C ports, one of which outputs up to 15W to charge smaller devices. On the rear, you have the DC port for the power supply, then the host USB-C port, which can provide up to 100W of power delivery to your laptop, followed by two DisplayPort outputs and an HDMI port for your monitors. There are then two more 5Gbps USB-A ports and a 1Gbps RJ45 port.

On the side of the dock there are also three security slots supporting Kensington Standard (K-Slot), Kensington Nano, and Noble Wedge. Having all three standards covered is a nice touch, and speaks to Startech’s focus on IT departments and managed deployments rather than individual consumers.

One absence worth flagging is a 3.5mm audio jack. Many competing docks at this price point include one, and if you use wired headphones or a headset at your desk, you will need a separate USB audio adapter. For a dock aimed at office use, that is a frustrating omission.

Display Output / Support

This hub officially supports three 4K displays through a single USB-C port, using uncompressed video powered by your laptop’s native GPU. The two DisplayPort outputs can each run at up to 4096 x 2160 at 60Hz, while the HDMI output is limited to 4096 x 2160 at 30Hz. In practice, most content is consumed at 3840 x 2160 (UHD 4K) rather than the maximum DCI 4K resolution, but it is good to know the hardware ceiling.

My work laptop, the Dell Pro 16 Plus (PB16250), only supports two external displays, and there was no workaround for this with this hub. That is not a fault of the dock – it is a limitation of the laptop’s GPU and driver stack – but it does underline the key difference between MST and DisplayLink. With DisplayLink, that same laptop would happily drive three external screens. With MST, it cannot. This is why I remain a fan of DisplayLink for work environments where laptops are frequently replaced and GPU capabilities vary.

I then switched to the Honor MagicBook Pro, which has an Intel Core Ultra 9-285H. That CPU supports three external displays natively, and this dock worked fine with it. The three displays appeared immediately on connecting the USB-C cable, with no driver installation required. The driverless operation is a genuine advantage in managed IT environments, where installing additional software requires approval or may conflict with existing configurations.

I initially tested the dock in my home setup, where I use the Samsung C49RG90 49-inch Super Ultrawide Monitor, running at 5120 x 1440. It probably comes as no surprise that I ran into issues there. I could not get it to run at its native 5120 x 1440 resolution. The best I could achieve was 3840 x 1080, and even that felt like it was pushing the bandwidth limits of the connection. Ultrawide and super-ultrawide resolutions are not officially supported, and the results reflect that.

Swapping the Samsung out for a standard 4K portable monitor, I was able to get three external 4K displays running without issue. If your setup uses conventional 4K monitors, the dock delivers on its stated specification without any obvious problems.

It is also worth noting the system requirements listed by Startech. MST must be supported by the host laptop for multi-display operation. If your laptop does not support MST over USB-C, the dock will still work, but all connected displays will mirror rather than extend. Windows 10 and 11 are officially supported, along with Ubuntu 24.04 and above. There is no macOS support, which is typical for MST-based docks – Apple does not support DisplayPort MST on its silicon.

Port Performance

The host connection runs at USB 3.2 Gen 2, which provides 10Gbps of bandwidth shared across all connected devices and the display outputs. In practice, that means you will not saturate the connection unless you are simultaneously transferring large files and running three 4K displays at once, but it is worth being aware of the shared bandwidth architecture.

The four USB-A ports on the rear and front are split into two speed tiers. The two front-panel ports and two rear ports all operate at USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps). If you are connecting an external SSD, you will want to use one of the two USB-C ports instead, which run at 10Gbps and offer noticeably faster transfer speeds. In testing, a Samsung T7 SSD connected to the USB-C port delivered sequential read speeds of around 950 MB/s, which is close to its rated maximum. Through the USB-A ports, that same drive was limited to around 400 MB/s – as expected given the 5Gbps ceiling.

The USB-C port with 15W charging output is fine for keeping a phone or small device topped up, but it is not fast enough for a tablet under load or a larger device. The 100W power delivery through the host port is more useful, and in testing it kept a laptop running comfortably without drawing from its battery during moderate workloads.

The Gigabit Ethernet port, driven by the Realtek RTL8153E chip, performed as expected. In testing on my home network, which runs on a UniFi setup with a 2500Mbps CityFibre connection through Aquiss, I saw throughput of around 940 Mbps in both directions – effectively saturating the Gigabit port. Wake-on-LAN and PXE Boot are both supported, which adds to the appeal for IT deployment scenarios. If you are managing a fleet of machines and need to push OS images remotely or wake machines outside of business hours, those are useful features to have confirmed.

There is no audio output on this dock, which is worth repeating here. If you connect a USB headset, it will work through one of the USB-A ports without issue, but there is no analogue audio jack. For an office dock at this price, that feels like a deliberate cost reduction rather than an oversight.

Compatibility and MST Limitations

Understanding the compatibility requirements before buying this dock is important. MST-based docks are not universally compatible in the way that DisplayLink products are. The laptop must support DisplayPort Alternate Mode over USB-C and must have a GPU capable of driving the number of external displays you intend to connect.

Intel-based laptops from the last few years generally handle this well. Most laptops running Intel Core Ultra processors support three or more external displays. AMD-based laptops are more variable – some Ryzen platforms limit you to two external displays regardless of the dock. Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus systems support MST, but compatibility can be inconsistent depending on the driver version. Startech officially lists Windows 10, 11, and 11 ARM as supported, which covers the Snapdragon platform, though testing with ARM devices is recommended before committing to a large deployment.

Apple Silicon Macs do not support DisplayPort MST and will not work with this dock in multi-display mode. If you have a mixed Mac and Windows environment, this dock is not the right choice.

Price and Alternative Options

The Startech 199UE-USBC-DOCK has an RRP of £153.59 via Startech directly and is available on Amazon for £115.

Startech has also recently launched the 208UE-USB4-DOCK, which is a USB4 dock with 2.5GbE networking. That one only supports dual 4K at 144Hz or single 8K at 60Hz, so it serves a different use case. It is available for £155.

The Ugreen CM843 14-in-1 dock is a driverless USB-C dock with a similar overall specification that is available for £100 (£130 RRP). There is also the Anker Nano Laptop Docking Station, which supports triple displays, also priced at £100 (£130 RRP).

Both the Ugreen and Anker options are worth considering for home users. They are meaningfully cheaper, offer comparable display and port specifications, and from a pure performance standpoint there is not a lot between them and the Startech. The key difference is the security locks. The Ugreen and Anker options lack Kensington slots entirely, which makes them less suitable for corporate or public environments where physical security matters.

The screw-locked USB-C cable and the triple security slot support on the Startech also add to its suitability for managed deployments. Those features carry a price premium, and whether that premium is justified depends entirely on the context. For home use, it probably is not. For IT procurement, where physical security and cable retention are genuine requirements, the extra cost is defensible.

Amazon is also well stocked with no-name hubs at lower price points, many of which claim triple monitor support. In my experience, those products are inconsistent. The display bandwidth specifications are frequently overstated, customer support is non-existent, and driver quality varies wildly. Startech’s three-year warranty and the MTBF rating of 84,290 hours are worth something when you are deploying hardware at scale.

Overall

The Startech 199UE-USBC-DOCK is a capable, no-frills docking station that delivers on its core specification. Triple 4K display support works as advertised when paired with a compatible laptop, the USB performance is solid, and the driverless operation is a genuine advantage in IT environments.

The limitations are real but not unexpected. The HDMI output is capped at 30Hz for 4K content, the USB-A ports are limited to 5Gbps, there is no audio jack, and ultrawide resolutions above 3840 x 1080 are not supported. The host laptop must also support MST natively, which rules out some older machines and all Apple Silicon Macs.

On the positive side, the build quality is solid for the price point, the screw-locking cable is a practical touch, and the inclusion of all three major security slot standards is a clear signal of who this product is designed for. The three-year warranty and the published MTBF figure add a degree of confidence that you do not always get from cheaper alternatives.

At £115 on Amazon, it faces genuine competition from Ugreen and Anker, both of which offer similar display and port performance for around £15 less. For a home user, that price difference is probably enough to tip the balance toward the alternatives. For IT departments or MSPs looking for a deployable dock with security features and a meaningful warranty, the Startech makes more sense.

If you need a dock to deploy to clients or staff, I’d lean toward the Startech. For home users, Ugreen or Anker represent better value for money at their respective price points.
